Dodged Bullet

Hurricane Irene was a tropical storm by the time it reached southern New Hampshire. The projected path was going to go directly through the Monadnock Region but shifted to the west. Southern Vermont was badly hit with severe flooding throughout the state.

Here in Peterborough, the rain and winds were much milder than anticipated. The garden got battered a bit but fortunately, no real damage....this time.

  1. Michael, I am glad to see you came through Irene with minimal damage. I think we can all be thankful it wasn't worse. The storm left 3 of our crabapples permanently leaning at 45 degrees and totally uprooted another one, but that's a small price to pay compared to what some of our fellow New Englanders went through, especially in Vermont.

  2. Yes Joe, we were lucky we had so little damage. I am worried to hear how our gardening friends from southern Vermont fared.

  3. Hi Michael,
Glad to hear your gardens are fine. In Putney, my gardens also suffered very little (hopefully this is the same for Gordon and Mary). Unfortunately it was my studio in Brattleboro that is in very bad condition! Half the building is collapsed and I am waiting to hear if we can get our equipment out. What a crazy storm!

  4. Helen,
Glad to hear you are safe. So sorry to hear about your studio. It sounds like the flooding, not the winds, was the biggest problem in Vermont. Let me know how Gordon and Mary's garden did. Good luck getting your equipment out!! I am afraid to see Brattleboro.
    Take care, Michael

  5. There were many dodged bullets, all up and down the east coast.

  6. How lucky! Your garden looks only a little shaken, but still beautiful. What an experience.

  7. Les,
You can never predict what Mother Nature has in store. When you think of the loss of life and the destruction of homes and businesses, what happens to one's garden seems inconsequential.

Yes Liisa, a bit shaken but in week you will never know that Irene had passed through. Very lucky, indeed.
