Before and After at the Pavilion Garden

The trimming of the hedges at the Pavilion Garden at Depot Park is always a turning point in the season for the public gardens. I love the contrast of the neatly sculpted hedges with the fluff of the grasses and maturing annuals in the garden. It is most effective at the end of the season right before frost when the annuals are in full swing. It is a lot of work but only needs to be done once if you wait until early July.

  1. Michael. I too love the look of something well-tended, sculpted, defined against something blowsy, undisciplined, free-flowing.

  2. Faisal, there are many ways of doing it. For example, Dixter and Oudolf have done it differently but I like both ways. Frothy is the word that comes to mind for me on how I like the herbaceous plants to feel against structure.

  3. Great illustration...thanks. I like the thought of anticipating it going from fuzzy (unpruned) to sharp / "frothy". That feeling seems almost as good as the final result.

  4. Dave,
I look forward to the frothy/structural denouement in September. I still have a lot of boxwoods to sculpt. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.

  7. Hi Michael - Thanks for your visit. Hope you are enjoying your garden (more than we are with ours). Been really busy and dealing with crazy weather in DC: severe winds and awful heatwave. All I've been doing is watering and cutting back everything crushed and flattened by the storms. I've been really discouraged, but feeling better. At least we did not lose power.

The hedges look so tidy and freshly clipped. Love the undulating lines. Do you all use manual clippers or electric shears?

  8. Loi,
Sorry to hear the going has ben so tough this summer. Hopefully that means a really lovely autumn!
We used a gas powered clipper. Unfortunately, it was dull but got the job done. If I had more time, I would have done it by hand. All the round boxwoods in my public and private gardens get done by hand so there is still plenty yet to finish.
