Hedges: From the Outside In

I have been struck by the beauty of the hedges on our tour. I thought some of the most moving and elegant photographs were looking at the gardens from the outside. The images don't feel welcoming yet, to me, they don't feel forbidding.  I have always admired the contrast of view over the horizontal line of a hedge. The lines are elegant and simple.

  1. A hedge seems to really "humanize" and "warm up" a barrier, that would otherwise look harsh. Whether formally clipped or informal. I think it's in the way the sun / shade sides contrast, such as in your hedge corner photo (5th down) - the way the varied planes on the green foliage warms and dapples the light may be the reason?

  2. I love the first photo... not a view you see of Hidcote very often! The hedges are definitely a large part of what make it a great garden.

    1. Thanks. I was struck by that view as well. I think the drizzly light also helped.

  3. I love those hedges!! Assuming some of the photos are from Hidcote? Those hedges are precision sharp.

We just sheared our 16 hornbeam trees....will eventually be 4 square boxes on stilts. Thanks, Michael, for taking us along!! Loi

    1. Yes, Loi, the first two images are Hidcote, the third is Kisftsgate ( a bit wobbly) and the rest are Sissinghurst. I was admiring your pleached hornbeams. They are lovely.
